The summer of 2017 will mark the sixth year of the Galaxy summer program. Since it's inception, Galaxy has striven to provide an education in engineering that is unfortunately lacking in the vast majority of elementary, middle, and even high-schools.
We started Galaxy during the winter of 2011 as an offshoot of the competitive robotics team. That summer, we began teaching limited summer classes as a supplement to the chess program at the distinguished Berkeley Chess School. Since then, we have expanded our curriculum in Berkeley, most recently with the new Galaxy programming camp. In recent years, we have also partnered with the Head-Royce School’s summer program, offering robotics as not only a summer elective but also as part of the Head’s Up program for disadvantaged students in Oakland. Our goal is to give Bay Area students their first exposure to the engineering and programming skills that are all too absent in the majority of California schools. Students at Galaxy will also gain valuable experience in working in a cooperative, team-based environment.
The Galaxy camps are taught by both high school and college students. Campers will work in small groups with mentors who have had extensive experience in robotics and computer science. Our instructors have competed in the Vex Robotics World Championships for six consecutive years starting in 2012. Over the years, we have received nearly 100 accolades at regional, state, and international levels of competition.
The VEX Robotics Design System offers students an exciting platform for learning about areas rich with career opportunities spanning science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). These are just a few of the many fields students can explore by creating with VEX Robotics technology. Beyond science and engineering principles, a VEX Robotics project encourages teamwork, leadership and problem solving among groups. It also allows educators to easily customize projects to meet the level of students’ abilities. The affordable VEX platform is expanding rapidly and is now found in middle schools, high schools and universities around the globe. Robotics hobbyists also appreciate the advanced capabilities of the VEX System (VEX ROBOTICS Copyright © 2002-2012) *.
